About helpyouboat

helpyouboat is an independent boating publication founded in 2024. We write the boating guide we wish existed when we first stepped on a boat — practical, honest, and free of the manufacturer talking points that pad most marine websites.

Who runs this site

The site is run by Sam Halberstadt, a USCG-licensed Master 50 GT captain with 18,000+ NM logged on power and sail. Technical articles are reviewed by Marina Chen, an ABYC Master Technician and SAMS-accredited marine surveyor based in San Diego.

How we make money

Affiliate links on buying guides (Amazon Associates, West Marine, Defender). We never accept payment to recommend a product, and we don't accept review units we can't return. Read our full affiliate disclosure.

How we work

• Every article is written by, or in collaboration with, a working captain or rigger.
• Buying guides are based on hands-on testing — see how we test.
• Technical content is reviewed by an ABYC Master Technician before publish.
• Articles are reviewed at least once a year and updated when gear, regs, or best practice changes. The "Updated" date in each byline is real.
