Most US states require a boating safety certificate to operate a powered vessel. This pillar covers state requirements, NASBLA-approved online courses, and the path to a USCG OUPV/Six-Pack license.
State boating safety certificate requirements
Forty-five states require a NASBLA-approved certificate for powerboat operators born after a cutoff date (typically 1988). Florida and Texas are the biggest markets.
Best online boating license courses
BoatUS Foundation (free in many states), BoaterExam, Boat-Ed, ilearntoboat. All NASBLA-approved, $30–$50, 3–6 hours.
USCG OUPV / Six-Pack license
Carry up to 6 paying passengers on uninspected vessels. Requires 360 days of sea time, an approved course, drug test, and physical.
Master's license and upgrades
25/50/100 ton master's licenses scale up vessel size. Towing, sailing, and assistance towing are separate endorsements.
Reciprocity between states
Most states honor any NASBLA-approved certificate. Florida and a few others have specific residency provisions.
