Trim is where racing skill meets cruising comfort. This sub-cluster covers main and headsail trim, halyard tension, vang and outhaul, and the small adjustments that wake up a tired-feeling boat.

Mainsail trim

Mainsheet, traveler, vang, outhaul, cunningham — what each control does and the order to adjust them.

Headsail trim

Sheet lead position, halyard tension, telltales, and the in-out rule for jib/genoa trim.

Reading telltales

Both flying smooth = perfect. Windward flutters = too high. Leeward flutters = too far off. Adjust in 5-degree increments.

Reefing system setup

Single-line reefing vs slab reefing, reefing lines, jiffy hooks. Setup the system so reefing is a 60-second operation.

Standing rigging tuning

Forestay tension, shroud tension, mast bend. Annual checks and the tools (Loos gauge) that make it accurate.
