Sailing makes sense once a few core concepts click. This sub-cluster walks through points of sail, tacking, jibing, sail trim, and the maneuvers every keelboat sailor should own.
Points of sail
Close-hauled, close reach, beam reach, broad reach, run. The clock face every sailor learns first.
Tacking — turning through the wind
Ready about, helm's a-lee, release the working sheet, trim the new sheet. The 4-step tack.
Jibing safely
The dangerous one. Sheet in tight, swing the helm slowly, ease the sheet on the new tack. Watch the boom.
Sail trim fundamentals
Telltales, leech twist, and the in-out rule. If the windward telltale flutters, head off; if leeward flutters, head up.
Reefing and heavy weather
Reef early. The first reef goes in at 18 knots; the second at 25. Practice in light wind so it's automatic in heavy.
